Diamond Plate: „The energy is like no other“

Once again a note from the US-Metal underground: Diamond Plate, a thrash band from Worth, Illinois, founded in 2004 and building a reputation as absolutely raucous live act, have only recently signed to Earache Records. They´ll release their full-length debut album called „Generarion Why?“, produced by Neil Kernon (Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Nevermore, Deicide, Judas Priest, etc.) in August 2011. You have just recently signed to Earache Records-how did you come to meet the guys at Earache?
A good friend of ours was also friends with Digby Pearson, the owner of Earache, and when we first released a demo in 2008, our friend showed us to Digby. After about 2 years of watching us grow and develop, it wasn´t until mid-2010 that we got offered to sign to the label.

Could you tell us about the early days of the band? What bands were you in before you joined Diamond Plate?
Diamond Plate is my first and only band, and it´s the same with the other guys in the band as well. We started playing together when we were 15 years old. Now 4 years later, we´ve grown a lot as musicians and songwriters.

How and when did you meet the other members of Diamond Plate? Did you audition for them?
Since 2007, the band consisted of me, Jon Macak (Vocals and Bass Guitar).and our drummer Jim Nicademus. We all lived a few blocks away from each other. After years of being a three-piece, it wasn´t until a few months ago that we added Mario Cianci as our second guitar player. He was actually a huge fan of ours and a close friend that lived in Florida. He flew out here to audition, and we immediately knew he was our guy.

Who writes the lyrics for the band?
The majority of the lyrics are written by myself and our vocalist/bassist, Jon. It´s definitely a huge collaborative effort, and we both have the advantage of being pretty good with words haha.

Who are some of your influences?
All of us listen to virtually every genre of music, from thrash metal and classic rock to prog and jazz, but our music definitely reflects bands like Metallica, Testament, Pantera, and Death the most. Metal is the music that excites us the most to play. The energy is like no other.

Do you find that "heavy metal" is moving towards looking back at thrash bands of the past, and being influenced by bands like Metallica and Megadeth?
Yeah I would definitely say that music ´trends´ seem to run in cycles of 15-20 years. That´s why everything from the ´80s era of metal has made such a comeback in the past few years. As long as new bands approach music from a fresh perspective and authenticity, we can move the genre forward and pave the way for metal to come.

Any new band out there that you like?
As far as thrash metal goes, I really dig Havok and Revocation. I was also blown away by Ghost´s debut album, ´Opus Eponymous´ and our label mates Rival Sons are gonna be releasing an incredible rhythm and blues record this year.

Do you enjoy playing live?
Live shows are where we really thrive. I think our debut album, "Generation Why?" really captures what Diamond Plate is about, but people will never truly know us until they see us live. We take pride in our intense live shows.

What lies in the future for the band?
Touring. And lots of it! Haha. And in the meantime we will be working on getting better at songwriting and playing our instruments. The best is yet to come.
