Does the Helsinki scene already suffer from a concert overdose? Only a handful of fans had made it to Gloria when MoonMadness from Tampere began their show. What a pity, because this young act offered great songs and a talented sympathetic front woman, Heidi Bergbacka. For me admirable alone how she mastered high heels despite this cable salad on stage... Her voice has thanksgod nothing to do with Opera, it´s a rather rough variable rock voice, yet sometimes it was swallowed up by the overall sound. Their style I would describe as mix of Power Metal and classical Hardrock (Rainbow!). The intro for “Ain´t No Angel” sounded so much like Deep Purple, and also Otto Hallamaa´s warm guitar sound a la Richie Blackmore, combining fragile melodies and catchy riffs (“Stroke At Midnight”)... and drummer Antto Nikolai preferred it flat like Ian Paice... During their show the audience number tripled, and MoonMadness received well deserved cheers.

Manzana are also from Tampere and had a female fronter, too – Piritta, a walking bunch of pure energy that hardly ever stood still and tried to lift the spirits with a lot of humour. Their Crossover Metal could easily be played on radio – which is basically not a bad thing: I had to think of Guano Apes or Pain or The Rasmus. A wild mix of Pop, Rap, Loops and Disco, Piritta herself used the term “Disco Metal”. They played an excellent cover of Faith No More´s “Digging The Grave”, “Falling To Pieces” though was one of their original songs. Not bad!

Tacere managed to lure people to the stage with a bombastic intro, yet the number of fans had not much increased. Sometimes it is hard to play as a headliner in Helsinki. This time I found the band more convincing than at FME, the combination of rough male voice (Karri Knuuttila) and clean female vocals (Helena Haaparanta) had much more harmony. Tacere might be THE Finnish Dark Metal band that is deeply rooted in 90s Goth (remember Tristania!). Powerful riffs with a touch of classic, bombastic epic melodies, highly dramatic vocals, and all that somehow very catchy. The now available debut album “Beautiful Darkness” surely has the potential to attract both Power Metal and Dark Rock fans. Only this evening it did not really work out with mass appeal.
