Sometimes even as a woman you can imagine what “Eternal Erection” would be like... however, it was not this one, but another Finnish band that provoked that kind of reaction this evening, providing an emotional roller-coaster ride: Apocalyptica´s “public rehearsal” at Tavastia Club. I can only recommend to get tickets for the upcoming Apocalyptica-tour (check STALKER tourdates)!

But right from the start... as usual for big Finnish acts, the concert was completely sold out in a couple of minutes, so also Apocalyptica offered a live-double feature to cope with the demand. Yet their “rehearsal” was not as packed as Amorphis´ a few weeks earlier, because after the photo-shooting you still had a chance to squeeze into the concert hall.

Only right before the start the stage decoration was revealed, a variation of those usual skull thrones and a practically transparent drum kit that looked great in combination with the fantastic light show. The Cello Rockers Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso, Paavo Lötjönen, Antero Manninen plus drummer Mikko Sirén started with a smooth Intro ("Worlds Collide"), but then they got you right in the face: Sepultura´s “Refuse Resist”, the new single “I´m not Jesus” and Metallica´s “Fight Fire With Fire”, and they audience went nuts.

Apropos right in the face, literally: in the photo pit you were sometimes threatened by Perttu´s or Eiccas Cello bows, as they did not sit still although Cellos are not quite as handy as e. g. a guitar. Once Eicca even raised his instrument high above his head – wow, what a strong man! Antero´s performance was as usual – Mr. Cool, sitting, with sun glasses and poker-face. Paavo was sitting most of the show, too, but later he jumped up, and around, and even motivated the audience to follow his example

But they hardly ever needed to invite the audience for clapping hands or even singing along. The program, e. g. “S.O.S.”, “Hope” from “Vidocq” Soundtrack, “Helden”, “Bittersweet”, Metallicas “Master Of Puppets” and “Enter Sandman”, made you wonder, stare, shout, bang your head, laugh, cry or all of that at the same time. Speed Metal played by cellos – e.g. the Peer Gynt Suite – sounds even more brutal, and although you already knew what to expect you were sometimes struck with awe. Incredible, which sounds they pull off, live, even “Death Metal Growls” - how the fuck are they doing that???? No wonder that even before the last musician had left the stage the audience was already demanding more.

Encores were Metallica´s “Nothing Else Matters” in a version that moved you to tears, “Life Burns” and the fastest and most brutal “Inquisition Symphony” (Sepultura) that I have ever heard. You wondered why there are no smoking strings yet, or instrument being sawn apart... and still people wanted more, and they got “Seemann”, before Tavastia Club closed its doors.

Well, what is left to say? A show that just leaves you speechless, and I assume most people went home, slightly sore-throated perhaps because of shouting too much, but with a happy smile, and some guys maybe also had... yeah, well... see above...
