After I had dragged my almost deep-frozen body punctually to Heaven Shall Burn
- the first to bands I unfortunately missed – I was confronted with a nice surprise, a huge teenage crowd. What I heard later is that most of them had come to see Suicide Silence . As far as I am concerned, I had never seen so many teens at a concert in Helsinki. Well, there were 2 important advantages, first the space in front of the stage was always pretty crowded and full of action, and secondly, no long queues at the bar.
Heaven Shall Burn
Quite early at 21.45 h and after a quick soundcheck, the guys from Saalefeld, Germany, entered Nosturi stage and cut it loose with "Counterweight". It was difficult to say how many people came just for them, but in any case it did not matter, because HSB managed easily to convince the crowd right from the start.
The heat inside the club was enhanced by those heavy tough guitar riffs and a double bassdrum attack, which shook the club and everybody inside – a nice contrast to the temperatures outside.
After e.g. "The Omen", "Combat" and "I was I am I shall be" from the recent album "Invictus" we were granted a little break with the instrumental Intro "Awoken", before "Endzeit" kicked it off again.
At this point singer Marcus Bischof dared a stage dive, accompanied by a fitting comment: "Holy shit!" Nothing to add to that, and therefore the invitation to form a moshpit was immediately followed through. After the last song "Sevastopol" naturally the crowd wanted more.
The first HSB concert in the Finnish capital can therefore be seen as great success, and also the band seemed overwhelmed. And because it was that great, the stagediving continued also during the encore "Black tears".

As I lay dying
Punctually at 22.45 h the stage was open for the US act As I lay dying. In contrast to Heaven Shall Burn, AILD feature many more clean vocals who are delivered by bass player Josh Gilbert. And just like some songs please the ear immediately, the audience was sometimes more into it, sometimes less, at least in the beginning. The gig had a bumpy start, the band needed a while to warm up to deliver more than “just playing songs”. But there was a continuous improvement, and at some point the crowd freaked out, you could see mosh pits and legs flying in the air.
AILD offered a technically sophisticated set quite in Metal Core style, at one moment very melodic, and then right afterwards - metaphorically speaking - they take the sledgehammer to destroy grandmom´s china collection. As I lay dying did not take over from the very first second, but they convinced me gradually with their extremely sticky ear candy. When the last song was played, Nosturi was once again going crazy, and demands for an encore were fulfilled. Singer Tim Lambesis had a humble request in the very end – a Wall of Death should shatter petite and placid Nosturi. Well, and as for that plus the whole evening – it was a major blast!
