On her debut album “Saknad Fornaldar“, Anna María is using Icelandic poems that are between 100 and 300 years old. Only two are younger and were written by Icelandic poet Sölvi Björn Sigurdsson. For anyone who does not know how to speak Icelandic, there are English translations of the lyrics. The title means “Missing the ancient times”.

The music is beautifully dreamy, good to carry the listener. Anna María´s voice is strong and clear, but never intrusive. Yet this is by no means music to fall asleep to. There is too much variety for that. Instruments range from guitar, bass (electric and double bass) and drums, to piano, cello, accordion and keyboards. All in all, the music offers a wide range of sounds to lose oneself in; a perfect mixture of classical and modern elements to captivate the listener.

Those who like the sound of a foreign language will like this album and can follow Anna María on a journey through time. Those who are also interested in good lyrics should take a look at the translations and will find that some of the old poems are surprisingly modern. Last but not least, it´s just beautiful poetry, even though that may not always come across in the translation.
An album for fans of Iceland and those who want to become fans. I´m sure it will find its way into my CD player quite often. Listening tip: The title track „Saknað Fornaldar“.
