The new opus of the Norwegian Ex-Mayhem-guitarist Rune Eriksen is released. He found in Portugal a new homeland, where the Norwegian doom-heaviness joins the Mediterranean melancholy. Even personally, for his characteristic guitar riffs meet the soft, lyrical voice of his partner Carmen Simões.
On “Blood Of Bacchus” she shows – more strong and more developed than on the former album “Silhouette” – the range of her possibilities. The first three songs still remind of already known structures, but with “Colours of the Dark” the metal parts get heavier emphasized, contrasting to the quiet passages in between. “Black Wings” is a very calm, Celtic vocal song with accented, spare accompaniment of guitar and cello and with the attendance of Ulver´s Kristoffer Rygg. After this starts the grandiose and varying „Appeler les Loups“, nine minutes long, in which Carmen uses her own language a full octave deeper – the song connects the known Ava Inferi sound with a new, sweeping shape of expression. “Be damned” stays on this level, and “Tempestade” surprises once more with richness of contrasts – acoustical guitars, Portuguese singing, and then the heavy riffs roar and yell interspersed by string sequences. More intensively the Portuguese character can’t be combined with metal. Awesome the song “Blood of Bacchus” itself: dramatic and intensive vocals, which affirm the development of Carmen’s voice, who formerly performed rather in higher, soft tunes. “Memoirs” starts with dark piano and tragical celli, accompanied by the melodramatic voice, the last song, which lets the album end in a heavy, gloomy mood.
Norwegian gothic Doom Metal meets the doleful poetry of the Portuguese Fado. Both are from seagoing nations, this might lead to the strong homogeneity and realness this record emits. A symbiotic ambiance like a language got created, whereby two cultural circles together articulate. The production and sound is warm and rich. To this record you can’t listen fast and hasty, you need some time, relaxation and wine to decrypt slowly the facets, but if you take the chance, you will discover, how much heart, diligence and thoughts are involved. I like to recommend “Blood of Bacchus” to every person with contemplation and the taste for melodic doom, gothic metal.
