There are bands you stumble upon only by accident, who also work their asses off in the clubs of Helsinki. Of course you start to wonder: How come no-one is talking about this band yet? Today, Santa Cruz from Helsinki are playing within a frame they rather deserve, e.g. brilliant light show, and the club is bursting at the seams `cause this concert takes place during Tuska Open Air 2010.
After the highly dramatic intro, which is borrowed from the "Kill Bill Vol.2" soundtrack (Ennio Morricone - "A Silhouette Of Doom"), they get on stage and start to rock with "Massive Overload". Soon follows my personal favourite "Screamin` For Adrenaline", next to other songs from their EP "Another Rush Of Adrenaline" like "Sweet Sensation" and "We`re Aiming High" and a selection of new songs which all sound more than promising.
Although Santa Cruz describe their style of music as "Good Ol` Glamorous Hard Rock" - what is right in fact - they do their stage shows without the elements which are typical for that genre. No Make-Up, no headbands / bandanas, no leggings... Nothing of it! Just Rock`n`Roll. They don`t set much store by accented coolness or image in general and if singer Archie feels like smiling, he just smiles, and the audience smiles anyway `cause the fun doesn`t exist only on the level of entertainment: It`s obvious how much fun the band itself has while their are performing and how well they are going together. Furthermore not every band has a handsome, half-naked guitar player on stage not being adored by girls in the first row, because this specific place is already filled with guys who are rocking and moshing.
The gig ends with the Billy Idol cover "Rebel Yell" which seems to be obligatory for every Santa Cruz show but has been performed very felicitous as always. Luckily, Santa Cruz are playing more often in Helsinki so we don`t have to wait too long till their next show...
