From Eden (debut album “Inherit the Eden“) to the end of the world as we know it (“Teotwawki”)! It’s a broad jump that Ari Nieminen, also busy with his other band Dauntless, Matti Reinola and Mikko Kolari (also Shamrain) dared to do and this jump proved to be too big for Hanging Garden, the side project of the above mentioned. “Teotwawki”, the second album of the Finns is first and foremost pretty tough and exhausting to listen to. That constant switch between unstructured sometimes soft -sometimes heavy parts which span seemingly never-ending 7-9 minutes each, makes you look for the “fast forward” button a little too often. The most irritating thing about this album, however, are the vocals – I have absolutely no idea what they are supposed to express? Teenage angst or Chewbacca sings metal? It gets my hackles up either way. Trying to be experimental come hell or high water can go really, really wrong sometimes… but if the guys wanted to set the apocalyptic tohuwabohu at the end of the world to music then congratulations, mission accomplished. If not then back to Eden for now.
