This is the re-release of a CD that had come out in 2005 already - yet not in Europe, so it seems. Chtonic from Taiwan have impressed Asian and US audiences exclusively so far, now they are on the best way to fame also in the old country over here. Their new album Takasago Army has impressed us already (here our review ), and it´s predecessor is getting to business right away - massive sound, symphonic Black Metal as if it came from Norway. First it´s only the language that makes the difference - until the typical sound of Taiwanese 2-string violin Er-Hu Geige or the clean female voice (Bass player Doris) provide a clear and distinctive characteristic.
Symphonic tunes and aggression with Speed-Thrash-Death-elements are kept in balance, the music is clearly influenced by Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth ( Bloody Gaya Fulfilled, Banished Into Death). Otherwise I rather think of those early 90s Scandinavian Gothic/Melodic Death bands (e.g. Tristania, Therion, or Italian Graveworm) when I listen to the epic tracks. And sometimes it even reminds me of classig Nightwish (Excultant Suicide).
Summing up - I can recommend this one, although I like the Takasago Army album better. Chtonic will also tour Europe with Arch Enemy in December, so you can check them out for yourself!
