Ten years ago, the Swedish Melodic Death Metal band, Scar Symmetry, was formed. In the beginning, they sounded a bit like Soilwork and Dark Tranquillity - the band, however, soon opted for a more progressive style, but still sticking to the same genre. Since 2008, their sound has been supported by two lead singers, both of them capable of clean and guttural voices. This is what the guys continue to do. “The Singularity” is much more progressive than the majority of Melodic Death Metal releases. But ´progressive´ does not necessarily equal ´better´ – only a few of the songs really work. The great “Limits to Infinity” is an example, “Neohuman” and “Neuromancers” are quite alright, too. On the opposite site, there are a lot of weird things on this album, like some of the instrumental parts and many vocal arrangements with altogether four different vocal layers. On top of it, there are no great melodies, riffs or memorable lyrics. Finally, there´s the production, which supports the overall impression of the album. It is much too bloated, especially the guitars have lost all their power and punch due to too much reverb and dominant synthesizer parts. Less bombast and complexity and more balls and melodies would have suited the album much better.
