Just they were mentioned as a better example in my CD review of Melissa Auf Der Maur`s newest opus, and now they are in the focus themselves `cause also the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club brought a new album into the record stores these days. I´m really curious about "Beat The Devil`s Tattoo" `cause the black rebels are one of few bands I pay attention since they released their debut album, so I have been following their activities over the years constantly.
The first song which is also the title track would fit onto "Howl", too. "Howl" was the third album of BRMC which left the path of psychedelic rock and was dedicated to the guys` preference for Country and Blues. These album polarised and for the following album "Baby 81" the rebels swapped the acoustic guitars to the e-guitars again. You can conjecture if the guys liked it or not but in fact they released the album after "Baby 81" on a small independent label and left the major one. Those album were dedicated to Country and Blues again. I can`t believe that it will be the same with "Beat The Devil`s Tattoo" even the first track sounds like this `cause already the album cover promises something else. It promises the BRMC style their fans know and love.
The next two songs show that I am right but "Bad Blood" and "War Machine" don`t impress me at all and I start to worry that I have to write a slating review again like I did it for Melissa Auf Der Maur. It`s quite honestly boring what comes out of the speakers. Sorry. "Sweet Feeling" is again a track which would fit onto "Howl". "Evol" reminds me pretty much of "Awake" from the self-titled debut. It`s not bad but it`s also not much exciting.
Half through the album I´m getting worried, as no-one likes it to write negatively about a band he or she actually likes very much.
With the seventh song comes the twist and and it finally starts to rock... Yeah! "Mama Taught Me Better" would have been also the better opener, definitely... "River Styx" continues that way, before "The Toll" regards the preference for music with acoustic guitars again. "Aya", the following track, sounds somehow sexy. Don`t ask - Just listen to it by yourselves... ;o)
The last three songs are long-breathed guitar playings again or rather one of them is again from the Blues category but this one blues song ("Long Way Down", to call a spade a spade) pleases me with its piano playing very much.
"Beat The Devil`s Tattoo" was obviously conceived as an album which is an intersection from all previous BRMC releases. The idea is nice and the guys from San Francisco have a good grasp of all these styles without any doubts. Even I who is not really much into Country and Blues liked the "Howl" record. But Country, Blues and Psychedelic-Rock on one record is a bit too much and I can`t accept an argument like this mix would avoid to bore you `cause many titles from "Beat the Devil`s Tattoo" are exactly doing this. Unfortunately.
I don`t believe that the guys can do it better. I know it. And they are busy. They release albums almost every second year so I will just wait and see with what they will coming up next. But this album won`t come into my record collection. Sorry.
