A-ha! So this is what schizophrenia sounds like! The Welsh trio S.K.W.A.D. plays a mix of alternative punk pop which is very melodic, to the point of being beautiful and touching, but at the same time insanely progressive, chaotic and violently abrupt. It`s like Placebo with ADHD.

But the debut album The Dead Still Dance is certainly interesting (I`m assuming the name has nothing to do with the Australian band Dead Can Dance). The band has so many ideas put in every single song that if they just took the time to sort them out in to separate songs their music could be much more listener friendly. But, then again, I`m guessing that`s not the idea behind S.K.W.A.D! They sound like who ever is listening is supposed to figure them out, and if you´re not able to do that then you can just bugger off! But it all just gets very confusing. Just when your mind is set for a song being a NOFX style punk tune, it becomes a strange Frank Zappa meets Muse song just to turn into a heavy metal riff. It`s funny how System Of A Down can do the same thing and make it seem like there`s a logic to it, but S.K.W.A.D. just leaves your head spinning. And, although the vocals are mostly melodic, the choruses aren`t very catchy at all, as they don`t really stick out but are basically just one more element in the endless sea of song parts.

But still there`s something oddly fascinating about S.K.W.A.D. They definitely have their own style and sound, but maybe they should realize that just because there`s only three of them doesn`t mean they have to compensate by playing more on every song than most bands play on an entire album!

P.S. Just to add to the schizophrenia, the album also has two demo recordings from 2002… Oh, by the way, the band was formed in 2004!
