After Forever´s album with the same title is the fifth output of the Dutch band. In my opinion the band has now good chances to widen their fanbase, because of the recent Goth-Rock-wave in Pop Charts (e. g. Within Temptation, Evanescence). Yet this sextet prefers the heavy riffs and even shows some Death Metal roots, not only with those rough male vocals but also with heavy guitars - combined with keyboard tunes and Floor Jansen´s velvet voice it results in an exciting mixture.
Another positive aspect: I cannot easily categorize this CD. There are elements of Power and Melodic Metal but also Industrial and Prog or Classic elements, e. g. the 11-min-hymn ”Dreamfight” that features a real orchestra (as well as ”Discord”). A comparison with Nightwish cannot be avoided listening to ”Evoke” or ”Withering Time”, but Floor Jansen is a flexible singer and varies her performance with styles, that means she can sing rough, too. Big names appear as guest musicians: Doro Pesch (vocals for ”Who I Am”) and Annihilator-Mastermind Jeff Waters; especially ”Transitory” and ”Equally Destructive” display his rough-thrashy riffing trademark.
Summary: A quite appealing and versatile album I can only recommend!
